JTM Steel Fabrications

A St Helens engineering company has used St Helens Chamber’s Business Growth Grant to give its growth potential a massive boost.

Now proudly boasting the accreditation of two internationally recognised quality standards, part-funded by the Business Growth Grant, JTM Steel Fabrications is winning contracts that were previously out of its reach.

The St Helens-based company was formed by current Managing Director Martin Gray in 2011. Following many months of hard work by Martin and his team, it has gained accreditation to both ISO 9001-2015 and BS 1090, formally endorsing the company’s commitment to total quality.

Martin has a long history in the steel fabrication industry and is a specialist in the design and manufacture of shielded enclosures. These are structures which protect IT equipment from attack and are predominantly used by national governments to defend their country’s IT infrastructure.

Martin said:

“Our main customer supplies the Norwegian Government with shielded enclosures. I’ve always recognised that having all our eggs in one basket is a bit risky, so I decided that we needed to branch out and start winning new business.

“Capability, experience and reputation, although required, are no longer enough to win work with the more prominent companies. You have to have the right accreditations in place, in particular the BS 1090, which means our products conform to the new CE marking regulations.”

The company engaged the services of a specialist consultant to ensure its management systems and procedures met the high standards required, with the support of the Business Growth Grant, which helped to fund this expense.

Funded by the European Regional Development Fund, the Business Growth Grant is available to SMEs based in, or moving to St Helens or Halton and operating in a business to business environment. It can provide up to 35% grant funding towards the cost of consultancy covering a wide range of projects.

Martin said:

“We had to make significant investments in both time and money to achieve our success, and the grant was a massive help with the financial aspect.”

The investment has already borne fruit, and JTM has recently won a contract with Stannah Lifts to build an access staircase and platform which gives access to a train station roof.

Martin added:

“Without the accreditations, we wouldn’t have even got through the door to quote. Now not only have we won this order but we’ve quoted on several others, it’s been hard work but it’s been well worth it.”
