CASE STUDY: Kick-starting a business opportunity
When Brian Bishop, managing director of Data Performance Consultancy, was initially looking for funding for his business he found that, although there was a lot of offers being made, not many fitted his needs.
He said: “Like any start-up the need for some investment into the business was essential. I’d been trailing around numerous funders who say they can fund but actually don’t look at new businesses so there’s a risk averseness there.”
Brian, who has his business based in Liverpool City Centre, ended up talking to different groups for advice before he was directed towards the Liverpool City Region LEP.
“I got advised by a contact through Liverpool Vision of the New Markets programme, that was set up through the LEP.” He said, “I was just getting into some consultancy work with the public sector and I knew there were potential development opportunities for an online portal to start looking at measurements of social value, so this was a new market for me. It was to build a portal that suppliers could log in to and show social value; how many jobs were created, how many apprenticeships were created, the quality of the opportunities etc.”
Through a four-month process, that included a tender advertised on the Local Growth Hub website, he received the help he needed to build the project.
“I got funded support to help me build an online portal, which I tendered through the Local Growth Hub. I got quotes from three local suppliers and got the system built for me”
The process ran through early 2015 and was pitched to show the value to Liverpool City Council of what their contracts carry out.
Brian added: “When I asked the LEP for the opportunity to access funding they allocated a member of their team to help me through the process. They helped me get the funding and work my way through what needed to be done.”
